Canada Express Entry Draw Hits Record Low CRS Score

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued a new Express Entry draw with the lowest Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score in three years, signalling a significant opening for skilled workers seeking Canadian permanent residency.

The January 15, 2026 draw issued 6,500 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) with a minimum CRS cutoff of 481 points — down from 511 in the same period last year. This is the largest single draw since 2023 and reflects the Canadian government's aggressive immigration targets for 2026.

Why scores are dropping:
- Canada has increased its immigration targets to 500,000 new permanent residents for 2026.
- Category-based draws for STEM workers, healthcare professionals, and French speakers have diverted higher-scoring candidates from general draws.
- The new Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) digital platform has made it easier for provinces to select candidates directly, reducing the general pool.

What this means for applicants:
- If your CRS score is above 470, you have a strong chance of receiving an ITA in the coming months.
- Candidates in STEM fields may benefit from category-based draws with even lower cutoffs.
- Provincial nominations add 600 points to your CRS score, virtually guaranteeing an invitation.

To maximise your CRS score, consider improving your language test results (IELTS/CELPIP), gaining additional work experience, or securing a valid job offer from a Canadian employer. Even a 10-point improvement in your language scores can boost your CRS by 20-40 points.
