Australia Doubles Skilled Worker Visa Allocations for 2026
The Australian government has announced a dramatic increase in skilled worker visa allocations for the 2026-27 migration program, doubling the number of places from 70,000 to 142,000. The move is aimed at addressing critical labour shortages across technology, healthcare, and engineering sectors.
Key changes to the skilled migration program:
- Subclass 482 (Temporary Skill Shortage): Processing times reduced to an average of 21 days for priority occupations including software engineers, data scientists, and cybersecurity analysts.
- Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent): Invitation rounds will now occur weekly instead of monthly, with lower points thresholds expected.
- Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional): New incentives including a fast-track to permanent residency after just 2 years in regional areas.
- A brand-new "Tech Talent" visa stream with a 5-day processing guarantee for applicants earning above AUD $120,000.
The tech sector stands to benefit most, with 45,000 of the new places specifically reserved for ICT professionals. Companies like Atlassian, Canva, and SafetyCulture have been lobbying for these changes, citing an estimated 100,000 unfilled tech roles across Australia.
For international tech workers, Australia now offers one of the most competitive packages globally: high salaries (average AUD $130,000 for senior developers), a clear path to permanent residency, and a lifestyle that consistently ranks among the world's best.
Applications under the expanded program open on July 1, 2026. Immigration agents recommend starting skills assessments through the Australian Computer Society (ACS) now, as processing can take 8-12 weeks.
