Japan Introduces Digital Nomad Visa with Tax Benefits
Japan has officially launched its highly anticipated Digital Nomad Visa, offering remote workers a 12-month stay with favourable tax treatment. The program targets tech professionals, freelancers, and entrepreneurs who can work remotely while experiencing Japanese culture.
Visa requirements:
- Annual income of at least ¥10 million (approximately $65,000 USD).
- Proof of health insurance coverage valid in Japan.
- No criminal record.
- Employment or freelance contracts with companies outside Japan.
Tax benefits are a major draw: Digital Nomad Visa holders are exempt from Japanese income tax on foreign-sourced income for the first 12 months. This is a significant advantage over similar programs in other countries that tax worldwide income from day one.
The visa also includes:
- Access to Japan's national health insurance system at subsidised rates.
- Ability to open a Japanese bank account.
- Permission to bring dependents (spouse and children under 18).
- Option to renew for a second year with a fresh 12-month tax exemption.
Japan's Ministry of Economy estimates the program will attract 20,000 digital nomads in its first year, contributing approximately ¥200 billion to the local economy through housing, food, and leisure spending.
For tech workers considering the move, Tokyo, Osaka, and Fukuoka have established dedicated coworking spaces and community programs for international remote workers. Fukuoka in particular has positioned itself as a "startup city" with English-friendly infrastructure and affordable living costs.
